AFP: Yahoo! summit focuses on battling cyber bullies

October 17, 2010 at 2:10 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

I say this time and time again….Get your children to teach you what they are doing online.  Get them to help you set up a social networking website so that you can follow what your kids are commenting about on a daily basis.  Also, you will be able to see the responses from their “friends” online.

I do have to disagree with one portion of this article…….Don’t befriend your kids in real life…..Just be a parent….Save the friend stuff for online…

YouTube MySpace gang arrests: Deputies in Polk arrest gang members promoting their gangs on YouTube and MySpace – OrlandoSentinel.com

YouTube MySpace gang arrests: Deputies in Polk arrest gang members promoting their gangs on YouTube and MySpace – OrlandoSentinel.com.

This story is not new at all.  While working as a detective for the prosecutor’s office, we noticed that this was happening more and more.  We found out one website that you could “apply” to be in the gang and then they came to the school and grabbed you up just like they would for a fraternity.  I have even seen sites from the KKK who have let you join online.  This goes to show you that no matter how long an organization, gang or group of people have been around, everyone will gravitate to technology to accomplish in days what it used to take months to do.

Orange County Approves Cyber-Bullying Policy – News Story – WFTV Orlando.

OK….Finally a school is taking the most drastic pro-active measures to stop cyber-bullying.  I had a seminar last night at Marlton Middle School for the parents and the room was very tense when it came to this issue.  No one has the answer and everyone is scared to say something in fear that their kid will be bullied even worse or beat up.  I tried to explain that our kids need to put their arms around one another and really stand up to the bully but that answer really didn’t go over that well.  The parents wanted to know what the school will do if it happens, not their kids.  My advice was for the administration to get involved and e-mail the bully back and explain that if they get one more complaint about that bully hurting other students that he or she WILL BE EXPELLED…..I love that the school in Orange County is doing just that.

How else are we going to keep our own children from killing themselves?

Reports of cyber stalking increasing | detnews.com | The Detroit News.

This article starts out slow but then really picks up speed towards the middle.  Read the quote below:

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office reports receiving eight times more cyber-stalking complaints than two years ago.

8 TIMES MORE???  That is a ridiculous number.  How are advocates and law enforcement ever going to keep up with these alarming stalking cases if they don’t have the resources to do it?

I, Keith Dunn, KDCOP have the answer.  Be proactive.  Get someone into the schools who can educate our youth on their level so that they understand that EVERYTHING the do online has consequences and repercussions.  That someone is ME!
